The event is co-funded by the Department of Economics through its “research seminars series” endowment and by the Department of History and Cultures through the Alma-Idea funded project “The Rise of Political Institutions: the Case of Mesopotamia” (OrEcon).

This workshop brings together academics across institutions to discuss topics such as: 

• Is Development Uniquely Modern? Athens on the Doorstep

• Cereals, Appropriability and Hierarchy

• The Rise of Inclusive Political Institutions: Opacity Vs. Time Inconsistency

This conference brings together research on political economy, culture, and narratives with a focus on historical processes. Emphasising historical perspectives enables a deeper exploration of long-term trends and dynamics, highlighting how narratives and cultural values both shape and are shaped by political and economic developments.
